VOICE Lessons

M.J. strives to foster a love of music and works to develop overall musicianship in her students. Voice lessons include on-going instruction in vocal technique and repertoire development. Lessons can include theory and sight-singing, particularly for younger students. Her students are a mix of professional performers and recreational singers and range in age from 8 to 70+.

M.J. has a passion for musical theatre and believes in exposing her students to singing different genres of music from music theatre to pop to classical. She is able to coach students for professional and avocational theatre auditions, and prepare them for Royal Conservatory of Music voice examinations. Her students have represented their local music festival at the Provincial level in both musical theatre and classical classes.

M.J. is a member of the Vocal Faculty at Sheridan College teaching private voice lessons and vocal coaching in the Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance program.  She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association (ORMTA).  She continues to take lessons and attend masterclasses to enhance her own skills and broaden her teaching ability.  M.J.'s teachers include Dr. Michael Warren (NYC), David Dunbar, and Henriette Asch (Toronto).

What People Are Saying

“I am an actor/singer/dancer in musical theatre and theatre.  Studying singing with MJ has been one of the best investments I have made in my career.  MJ is an excellent singing teacher.  Before studying with MJ, I considered myself to have a “classic musical theatre voice”.  I am now developing a more contemporary musical theatre sound.  I am learning how to colour my voice in a way that matches my character’s age, emotional state and intentions, all while employing a very healthy vocal technique.  We do vocal exercises that develop head voice, chest voice, warmth, brightness, lightness and darkness.  I have had many singing teachers, but MJ is the first to develop my chest voice with me.  Also, my high notes are much easier to sing since studying with her.  I also love that MJ is so easy to work with.  She is very professional and very personable, and I always have fun in my lessons with her.  She is also extremely knowledgeable about appropriate repertoire for musical theatre auditions that suit the production and/or theatre company I am auditioning for, and that shows off my voice and the different colours/styles that I can now sing because of our work together!”

“I had M.J. as my voice teacher for two years when I was a Music Theatre student at Etobicoke School of the Arts and I am so grateful for the time that I had to work with her on many different kinds of music and vocal technique. Not only did M.J. help me in my learning process with my musical theatre songs for school but she also worked with me on classical repertoire in preparation for my RCM exams. This prerequisite training was great preparation for my post-secondary studies in vocal music at Queen’s University. M.J’s patience, support and incredible musicianship allowed me to grow as a young performer in a calm, comfortable and safe learning environment. She motivated me to work harder and is always incredibly optimistic and sincere in lessons. I am really looking forward to working with M.J. again in the future.”

“I just wanted to let you know how much D. is enjoying her lessons with you. On the way home this past Tuesday she was grinning from ear to ear and said, "I'm learning so much! MJ is awesome and she's teaching me to sing the way I've always wanted to sing!”
